"Joey, The Shy Private Eye" is a fictitious character designed to help tell the story of the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program.
The TKCP fosters wildlife and habitat conservation in the Huon Peninsula of Papua New Guinea through global partnerships.
The Huon Peninsula, is considered a high-priority area for conservation efforts due to the significant amount of intact rain forest,
high species endemism and lack of protected areas for wildlife. Destruction of the rain forest by mining, logging, and development
threatens the continued existence of Papua New Guinea’s unique flora and fauna, including the endangered Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo,
a flagship species for Papua New Guinea’s people. The Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program expands health care for villagers,
improves schools, and empowers local villages to manage natural resources by training Papua New Guinea university students
and local landowners as field research assistants and conservation advocates.
The program director is Lisa Dabek, she started the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program in 1996 in
collaboration with the people of the YUS region (Yopno, Uruwa, and Som zones). Lisa started studying Matschie’s tree kangaroos in 1987,
she is now a senior conservation scientist at the Woodland Park Zoo and is considered a leading expert on tree kangaroos.
Joey was created by Wendra-Lynne, as a member of the Art Directors Guild
Wendra has traveled the world designing national commercial campaigns since 1989.
Wendra hopes that Joey will foster awareness on how essential the cloud forest is to the vitality of all life on our planet,
much like Smokey the Bear inspired her as a very young girl.
